Sweet potatoes: The surprise vegan treat in a Spanish pasteleria near you

THINK the average pastelería in Spain is a vegan no-go?

Go inside next time you pass one and you may be surprised to find the humble sweet potato sitting on the counter.

Called boniato in Andalucia, and batata or camote elsewhere, this healthy snack is a popular rival to the belly expanding cream filled pastries it sits besides.

Many sweet bakeries (pastelerías) simply bake them before putting them out to sell.

Do check before buying though that they haven’t been drizzled with honey, as some can be.

¡Buen provecho!
