TRYING to dine out vegan for yourself or a friend can bring some people out in a cold sweat.
But more and more venues in Huddersfield are now embracing animal free cuisine.
I scoured the town to find the best vegan-friendly hangouts for the Huddersfield Examiner, so vegans can leave their pocket full of emergency nuts and bread at home (trust me, I’ve been there).
Trinity Street, Tuesdays to Sundays 10am to 6pm
Huddersfield’s new and only fully vegan cafe. Expect a weekly changing blackboard menu with soups, smoothies, mains, snacks and most importantly, home made
One of the longest-established vegan friendly eateries in the town. There is a separate vegetarian menu, with many of the dishes vegan.
Byram Arcade Westgate/Station Street, Wednesday to Saturdays 9am to 9pm
Cosy cafe-cum-bar and relaxed restaurant that serves sandwiches, baked potatoes, salads and falafel burgers and wraps. Changing daily specials include vegan options and staff are very accommodating regarding other dish requests.
11am to 8 pm Monday to Friday, 12 to 8pm Saturday and 12 to 6pm on Sunday
Formerly famous for its burger challenge, its new El Pasajero Central and Southern American menu gets the vegan thumbs up. Several sides can be added to the lentil chorizo filling.
Packhorse Centre, 8.30am to 5.30pm
Food from sunny climes for cold Huddersfield days. This cafe is the only place to find Mauritian cuisine, which consists of various curries and stews. There is also a separate burger, pannini, burrito and baked potatoes menu with vegan options.
New Street, Sundays to Thursdays 4pm to late and 4pm to 3am Fridays and Saturdays
There’s only one main dish on the menu here, and that’s its that much-talked about diet ruiner, the pizza.
After requests by dairy free eaters, vegan bases are now on offer. Diners can pick three vegetable toppings for a set price. The hardest part is to choose whether to add vegan cheese or hummus onto the base or go all out and have the unholy alliance together.
Wood Street Bar
Wood Street, Mondays to Wednesdays noon to 11pm, Thursdays to Saturdays noon to 2am and Sundays 3 to 10pm
Another place that has got on the vegan pizza band wagon, following a change in management. No vegan cheese here but the more healthy alternative of grated carrot. You get an extra topping for the same price as in Bar Maroc to boot.
Wood Street, Tuesday to Saturday 5pm to late.
Two main dishes and three starters on offer here for those with a spice addiction who are wanting to try something a little different.
Great place to indulge your cocktail-loving side too.
Brighouse Road, Mondays to Thursdays 8am to 11pm, Fridays and Saturdays 8am to midnight and Sundays 8am to 10.30pm
I know what you’re thinking. But surprisingly the chain now has several vegan options on both its main and children’s menus, including butternut squash and kale bake, a wellington and a cottage pie. Sage and onion stuffing is also a goer. Family Sunday roasts out need no longer be a thing to send you into a panic-stricken meltdown.
Viaduct Street, Tuesdays to Saturdays noon to 3pm and 5pm to last sitting at 9.30pm and Sundays 5 to 9pm.
A new rival to Sukon Thai. The vegan-friendly menu may be a bit smaller but is proving to be a popular evening out.
St George’s Square, Sundays to Thursdays 5 to 11:30pm and Fridays and Saturdays 5pm to 12:30am.
Happy to ensure chosen dishes are cooked in vegetable oil rather than non vegan alternatives. Just ask when ordering. Naan bread not suitable but rice and chapatis are fine.

Mexican Burritos and fajitas with stir-fried veggies on offer.
Warehouse, Zetland St, Mondays to Thursdays 10am-1am, Fridays 10am to 3am, Saturdays 10am to 4am and Sundays 10am to 12am
Vegan sports fans need not go hungry here, with two tempting main dishes to try out while watching the latest game on the telly. They are the Asian khichdi and the Lebanese-style aubergine crumble.

Go for its Persian vegetable stews and Middle Eastern appetisers.

Also served are soy based coffees and matcha green tea lattes.
Church Street, Mondays to Fridays 7am to 7pm, Saturdays 7.30pm to 6.30pm and Sundaysfrom 9am to 6pm
Arguably the independent go-to place for bagels. Hummus and roast veg are the main vegan filling, which can also be served in a panini. Several salad options are there for those on a health kick, along with a vegan meze board. Soy milk is on offer to take advantage of their large coffee menu. Also check it out for its mini art exhibitions and late opening cultural events.
